Letterpress printing workshops

Set in a relaxed friendly atmosphere, this is a great opportunity
to experience letterpress printing
working directly with wood and metal type

If you have a love for type, print and messaging this is the workshop for you!

Overview of the workshop
This is a one-day introduction where you will learn the basics of letterpress printing, setting wood and metal type and then hand inking and printing on one of our two proofing presses. There’s no need for any previous experience, just an excitment about the process and a day being creative in a print studio!

In this workshop we will look at conveying your own messaging working directly with my collection of wood and metal type you will have a connection with a process that has been around for centuries.

Morning Session
To help you become more familiar with the process we will work together to create a collaborative piece, based on the Delittle’s Wood Type Specimen catalogues. Delittle’s was established in 1888 and when it finally closed in 1998 it was the last manufacturer of wooden type in Britain. The Company’s catalogues are now sought-after collector’s items.

Each person will set a word which they think best shows the characters of their chosen font from the wood type collection. We will then arrange the type, hand ink and print onto A2 paper.

Afternoon Session
You will now move on to create your very own print, with a word count of between 4-8 words. (This is to make sure you will finish your piece in the time allocated.)

By the end of the day everyone will have completed 2 prints, because of the ink we use the drying time can take around 3 days, the finished prints can be picked up from the studio or posted out within the coming week. You can also take them home on the day depending on how you travelled to the studio.
